We are a church affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention located in Winder, Ga. Our church membership is made up families from four surrounding counties as we are in a rapidly growing area 40 miles east of downtown Atlanta, Ga. Our church currently averages 600 in worship and growing! We are a church committed to solid, expositional preaching and reaching out to our community with the gospel of Jesus Christ.
JOB DESCRIPTION: MINISTER OF STUDENTS
(Ministerial: Full-time)
Principal Function: The Minister of Students is responsible to the Senior Pastor as part of the Ministerial Staff and provides direction for youth grades 6-12. This includes all current ministries and the development, implementation, and direction of new ministries as they relate to students.
Reports To: Senior Pastor
Directs: All Student Ministry personnel including paid and lay leadership, and those responsible for Life Groups/Sunday School and other church related organizations which lie in scope of responsibility.
Purpose: To provide specific leadership for Student Ministry development (6th-12th grades) through planning, coordinating and evaluating activities which support the objectives and mission of the church.
*Responsibilities:
The Minister of Students shall endeavor to relate these ministries to other ministries of the church in order to achieve the overall goals and objectives of the church.
- Work with the ministerial staff and the church members to achieve the goals and mission statement of the church.
- Provide supervision to the Student Ministry as outlined in the Personnel Organizational Chart and as directed by the Senior Pastor.
- Direct the planning, coordination, operation, and evaluation of a comprehensive Student Ministry (Life Groups/Sunday School, Discipleship, etc.). This should be accomplished as follows:
- The development of the ministry.
- The recruitment, training, and supervision of workers, volunteers, etc. to accomplish the goals of the ministry.
- Input with the Senior Pastor into the selection of materials and resources.
- The on-going evaluation of the success of this ministry through the evaluation of space needs, supplies, resources, leadership needs, and the setting of annual goals in regards to Sunday School units, outreach, enrollment, and attendance.
- The development and supervision of the annual budgets for all the Student Ministries.
- Assist the Senior Pastor in:
- Training for all Student workers and students.
- Coordinate and maintain a prospect file for the Student Ministry.
- Establish and maintain positive relationships with local middle and high school principals and administrative personnel in order to promote the opportunity to be on campus regularly to meet, visit, and participate with students from First Baptist Church.
- To develop and implement activities in the Student Ministry as follows:
- Plan with the Senior Pastor a detailed calendar of events that will enhance the overall Student Ministry and compliment the overall ministries of First Baptist Church.
- Plan, coordinate, and supervise events, trips, concerts, retreats, etc.
- Initiate and maintain open communication and involvement with students in the ministry, and their parents, by keeping parents informed of the many opportunities and activities.
- Enlist parental support and involvement in leadership roles.
- Develop and supervise the annual budget of these on-going ministry activities.
- Work with the various committees and ministry leadership teams in providing policies, procedures, evaluation, and information about the overall Student Ministry to the church family.
- Be aware of the latest materials and methods related to Student Ministry.
- Address development characteristics of early adolescence with workers, volunteers, and parents.
- Mobilize the students of First Baptist Church to be on mission with God in their home, community, city, state, country, and around the world.
- Assist the Senior Pastor and other ministerial staff in hospital and in-home visits of the congregation and prospects in times of need or grief as needed or requested.
- Assist in pastoral counseling as needed or assigned.
- Assist in all areas of ministry when appropriate and when needed or assigned.
- Provide staff assistance, leadership, and support for assigned committees or ministry teams.
- Related to Students:
- Lead students to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
- Make disciples who are committed to God, His Church and His mission in the world.
- Maintain and coordinate weekly Bible studies and worship experiences for grades six through twelve.
- Coordinate and plan, in conjunction with the Student Ministry Lead Team, student trips and activities following the Student Activities checklist.
- Coordinate an overall curriculum plan for teaching Students on Sunday morning.
- Plan and/or coordinate at least one Student Ministry mission project during the year.
- Be available for one-on-one counseling/home visits.
- Develop and implement a ministry program to provide for college students.
- Communicate and/or make announcements regarding upcoming student activities.
- Related to Parents and Student Ministry Volunteers:
- Work alongside parents in assisting with the spiritual growth of the students.
- Be available for consultation with parents concerning their student.
- Involve parents in the student ministry to and with their student.
- Cultivate relationships with students and their families to help assimilate them into our church body.
- Recruit, train, and develop parents and adult leaders as teachers and volunteers.
- Be able to perform funerals and/or weddings as required.
- Must be able to delegate responsibilities to adult and student leaders.
- Coordinate and administer the annual Elizabeth and B.C. Hill Scholarship fund.
- Perform other duties or services as assigned or needed by the Senior Pastor.
Qualifications, Job Skills, and Character Traits Required:
- Strong Christian character that demonstrates a close personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college is required.
- Seminary degree, or completion within twelve months, from an accredited theological or divinity school is preferred.
- Minimum of four or more years of full-time experience leading a student ministry of at least 50 youth is preferred.
- An ordained minister is preferred.
- A desire to pursue additional education is preferred.
- Must have good communication skills (verbal and written; public and private).
- Must have a desire to continue to grow in an understanding of the Bible and ability to teach from scripture.
- Be able to confront redemptively in times of conflict.
- Maintain professional and healthy interpersonal relationships with others on staff.
- Be able to manage time well (includes personal time management and church calendar time management).
- Build relationship bridges between the church and the local middle and high schools.
- Have a basic knowledge of adolescent development.
- Have a working knowledge of parent-teen relationships.
- Have a grasp on current culture in which students are living.
- Be able to make wise decisions.
- Must be computer literate.
- Must possess skills in maintaining issues of confidentiality.
