Principle Function

The Associate Pastor of Children and Families exists to oversee and provide structure for the discipleship and spiritual growth of children and families. He will also carry out additional pastoral duties, alongside the pastoral staff, such as hospital visits, funerals, and weddings as needed. He will seek to develop and maintain a program in which children discover God and build a foundation for a lifelong relationship with Him. He will also provide avenues for families to assimilate and learn how to reflect God in their family unit through a community of believers in similar life stages, while giving them resources and training on how to disciple their own children and lead them to Christ.

General Duties

  • Support the Senior Pastor in every area of ministry and function so that the overall mission of the church is consistently pursued and prioritized
  • Invest time in pursuing the Great Commission and helping the church to do the same
  • Assist visitors and church members in discovering groups that will help them grow in their faith, build relationships with others, and study God’s Word
  • Be prepared for and attend weekly staff meetings
  • Coordinate work with assigned support staff to aid in accomplishing ministry goals
  • Assist Nominating Committee in enlisting volunteers for ministry specific committees/teams
  • Build relationships with state denominational and local associational leaders as well as local schools and churches to create a network of resources and partners to accomplish ministry goals
  • Provide pulpit supply as needed
  • Implement other duties as assigned by the Senior Pastor or Executive Pastor

Specific Responsibilities
 
Children

  • Develop, implement, and maintain a comprehensive program that encompasses nursery, children, and families that agrees with the mission and philosophy of the church, seeking to promote and strengthen intergenerational relationships within the church
  • Ensure that the children’s ministry is providing Biblical instruction to instill a Biblical worldview
  • Plan, coordinate, and implement special activities for the children’s ministry
  • Coordinate a team to plan and execute Vacation Bible School, serving as VBS Director as needed
  • Supervise and coordinate recruiting, screening, and training of all those who will work with minors at any church program, activity, or event
  • Ensure cooperation and coordination with all age-group ministries and adult discipleship
  • Supervise, coordinate, and fill in for children’s ministry classes or groups in the absence of a teacher, director, or leader, working alongside volunteer leaders and other staff members
  • Maintain ministry areas and resource rooms used by the program
  • Oversee, equip, and collaborate with ministry specific committees/teams (Children/Preschool/Nursery, Child Protection, Security, etc.) to help accomplish ministry goals
  • Oversee, equip, and collaborate with the Nursery Director
  • Oversee, equip, and collaborate with the Children’s Ministry Program Coordinator
  • Oversee the family ministry budget

Families

  • Develop, implement, and maintain a comprehensive program that encompasses nursery, children, and families that agrees with the mission and philosophy of the church, seeking to promote and strengthen intergenerational relationships within the church
  • Provide family ministry programs that create, strengthen, and guide adults in Christian family life development
  • Equip parents to be the primary disciplers of their children and to know how to share the Gospel with their children, in collaboration with the Associate Pastor of Students and Member Engagement
  • Ensure cooperation and coordination with all age-group ministries and adult discipleship
  • Plan special events, conferences, or retreats to complement the children and families ministry programs
  • Provide Biblical counseling to children and parents in matters of personal family concerns
  • Build relationships with families and children by attending school activities or other important events when able
  • Cooperate with and support First Learning Center, providing visibility and promotion to families
  • Maintain ministry areas and resource rooms used by the program
  • Oversee the family ministry budget

Other

  • Inform the church staff or Properties Committee of any needed facility maintenance
  • Assist in the moving of tables, chairs, and other equipment as needed for events on campus (e.g. Wednesday Night Supper, Sunday School, discipleship classes, on campus community events, families events, etc.)

Required Qualifications

Spiritual

  • Have a clear testimony of faith in Jesus Christ and a growing personal relationship with Him expressed by ongoing spiritual disciplines such as Bible reading, prayer, personal worship, confession, fellowship, faithful and sacrificial giving, etc.
  • Live a Spirit-led life that exemplifies 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9 and have a willing spirit of ongoing discipleship that demonstrates a teachable attitude and a godly lifestyle
  • Be a good steward of church resources and finances
  • Hold to the Baptist Faith and Message 2000 as a statement of belief
  • Have a heart for the discipleship, spiritual development and growth of children and adults

Professional

  • Have a degree in either education or theology from an accredited university or seminary (masters degree preferred; seminary work beneficial)
  • Demonstrate a high level of excellence in discipleship and ministry to children and families
  • Proficient in the use of technology, databases, spreadsheets, etc.
  • Have competency in operating audio/video/lighting equipment
  • Have competency in goal setting, planning, budgeting, collaborating, communicating, promoting, recruiting/equipping, executing, following-up and assimilating, celebrating, and evaluating

Personal

  • Support the leadership of a pastor led, deacon served, staff equipped, committee supported, and congregationally affirmed church
  • Possess strong leadership and organizational skills
  • Have strong interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written)
  • Be a peacemaker, team builder, and encourager
  • Have the ability to lead, train, and mentor others
  • Demonstrate self-motivation and the ability to motivate others
  • Embody the spirit and biblical example of servanthood
